TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia is projected to have the world's fourth-strongest economy by 2050, adding that the country's younger generation will play a key role in shaping that future.
"We must not be arrogant, but some say Indonesians are sometimes unaware of how great and how much potential our country has. What I want to say is that 2050 is only 24 years away, and that will be the time of today's younger generation," Prabowo said at the Democratic Party's 25th anniversary celebration at Indonesia Arena in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 9.
Prabowo said a number of experts and global institutions had projected that Indonesia would become the world's fourth-strongest economy by 2050.
He said Indonesia's future would be shaped by the younger generation, which would carry on the country's development and national revival.
"President SBY and I are like steps on a staircase that the younger generation will use to climb, take over the responsibility, and continue Indonesia's rise," he said.
Prabowo also highlighted Indonesia's vast size and the challenges involved in managing its territory and providing public services.
He compared Indonesia with Singapore, which he said has around 300 schools, while Indonesia has approximately 300,000 schools spread across the country, from small islands to mountainous areas.
Despite the challenges, Prabowo said Indonesia, now 81 years old, remained strong and united.
"We are different, but we remain firmly united, and we are becoming stronger in facing the future," Prabowo said.
