TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that he never promised to pay a US$1 billion (Rp17 trillion) membership fee for the Board of Peace (BoP) or the Peace Council, an international body founded by U.S. President Donald Trump. According to Prabowo, Indonesia is only committed to sending troops to the Gaza Strip through the International Stabilization Force under the command of the Board of Peace.
Prabowo explained this in an interview with several journalists and experts at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java. The question-and-answer session took place from Wednesday night, March 18, 2026, until early Thursday morning, March 19, 2026.
President Prabowo emphasized that no financial commitment was ever promised to the U.S. regarding Indonesia's participation in the Board of Peace. "We never said that we would contribute US$1 billion," said Prabowo, quoted from a video interview shared by the Presidential Secretariat on Sunday, March 22, 2026.
According to Prabowo, this is evident from Indonesia's absence from the founding donors' meeting held in Washington, D.C., on February 19. "Each of them made contributions, some possibly larger. But Indonesia was not present. When asked, I did not commit to any money at all," said Prabowo.
Prabowo also emphasized that Indonesia is prepared to contribute peacekeeping forces to the Board of Peace, but not funds. According to the Chair of the Gerindra Party, Indonesia's commitment to the organization involves sending troops as needed. "We said we are ready for peacekeepers, how many are needed," said Prabowo.
However, Prabowo continued, Indonesia will consider making financial commitments if a ceasefire is successful and reconstruction of Gaza begins. He explained that Indonesia does not rule out contributing to the rebuilding of Gaza. "We have Baznas (National Board of Zakat), and we have previously built hospitals and provided various other assistance there," said Prabowo.
He reiterated that members of the Board of Peace are not required to pay a membership fee. "There is no commitment to pay at all," said Prabowo.
