TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police are considering the possibility of exhuming the body of Arya Daru Pangayunan, a diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was found dead in his rented room in the Cikini area, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi, Head of the Public Relations Division at the Metro Jaya Regional Police, said the option of exhumation is currently under consideration.
“This is still being thoroughly investigated,” Ade Ary said at the Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Friday, July 11, 2025.
Earlier that morning, a team from the Subdirectorate of Resmob under the General Crime Detective Directorate conducted a crime scene investigation.
The operation involved police medical personnel, forensic experts from the Forensic Laboratory Center, Inafis Bareskrim, and doctors from RSCM who had previously conducted the autopsy.
“This case is being handled professionally, proportionally, and with great caution,” Ade Ary said. He also noted that the area had been secured by personnel from the Menteng Police Sector and Central Jakarta Police Resort.
Investigators are still awaiting full lab results from the examination of Arya's internal organs. The forensic pathology analysis is ongoing. “We are still waiting for the autopsy results,” he added.
Arya was discovered lying on a bed, his head wrapped in yellow tape, and his body covered with a blue blanket. Police confiscated evidence from the scene, including rolls of tape, plastic bags, a wallet, trousers, and the clothes he was wearing.
Over-the-counter medications for headaches and stomach pain were also found, but they are not currently linked to the cause of death.
Forensic tests showed Arya’s fingerprints on the tape around his head. However, police have not determined whether the tape was applied by Arya himself or by someone else.
CCTV footage showed the landlord and another man trying to open the room's window after Arya failed to respond. Arya’s wife last communicated with him on the evening of Monday, July 7, at around 9 p.m. She attempted to contact him again the next morning between 5 and 8 a.m. but received no reply.
She then asked the landlord to check the room. When Arya did not respond, the landlord forced open the already-damaged window. Once the door was unlocked, Arya was found dead inside the locked room.
Police said there were no signs of physical violence or missing items in the room. However, the public has expressed suspicion over Arya’s death, speculating it might be connected to his role as a diplomat handling sensitive cases involving Indonesian citizens overseas.
In response, Ade Ary said investigators are looking into Arya’s background and recent activities. “The victim’s daily activities, all the way until his discovery deceased, will all be thoroughly looked into,” he said.
Authorities are also questioning people close to Arya. “They are communicating with the individuals in the victim's circle, taking their statements,” Ade said.
Addressing speculation about the pried window and potential CCTV blind spots, he assured the investigation would be conducted scientifically.
“To make the incident complete, the ring will be expanded to ensure the story becomes an undeniable fact.”
The Metro Jaya Police have officially taken over the case from the Menteng Police Sector and the Central Jakarta Police Resort to accelerate the investigation. Ade explained that different levels of the police have different operational capabilities.
“This is to enhance the speed of case resolution,” he said.
As of Friday afternoon, the police had not confirmed whether new evidence had been secured from the second crime scene investigation. “We will confirm that later,” Ade stated.
Although Arya’s family has not formally requested a deeper investigation, the police say they are being proactive. “What’s for sure is that we will handle this case professionally and we will resolve it,” he said.
