Philippines' Marcos Asks Cabinet Ministers to Resign After Election Setbacks

5 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has instructed all cabinet ministers to voluntarily resign.

This directive, reported by Anadolu on Friday, comes after government-backed candidates performed disappointingly in the May 12 midterm election, as confirmed by the Philippine Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) on Thursday.

According to the PCOO, this cabinet reshuffle aims to allow the president to evaluate the performance of each department and determine who will continue to serve in alignment with his government's recalibrated priorities.

President Marcos Jr. stated, "It's time to realign government with the people's expectations." The PCOO added that this move marks "a clear transition from the early phase of governance to a more focused and performance-driven approach."

The presidential office assured the public that government services would remain "uninterrupted" during this transition period.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was elected president in 2022 and has three years remaining of his single six-year term, which concludes in 2028. In the recently concluded election, only six of the senate candidates endorsed by Marcos secured seats, a result below expectations.
