TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) has launched a book titled 'Spirit of Humanity: Disaster Risk Management a la Megawati Soekarnoputri.' The book contains the track record and disaster handling methods of the Chairperson of PDIP, Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is also the 5th President of Indonesia.
PDIP launched the book, authored by Kristin Samah, on Sunday, January 11, 2026 in Ancol, North Jakarta. The book launch coincided with the national working meeting or Rakernas of PDIP at the same location.
The Secretary General of PDIP, Hasto Kristiyanto, stated that the book contains Megawati's views and practices in managing disasters. 'The book 'Spirit of Humanity' describes the disaster mitigation management of Mother Megawati Soekarnoputri, and her great concern for various environmental and earth conservation movements,' said Hasto at the location.
According to Hasto, the launch of this book is also concurrent with PDIP's humanitarian actions in several disaster areas, especially in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, which were affected by floods at the end of November 2025. Hasto mentioned that PDIP has sent various aid to the affected locations.
The book 'Spirit of Humanity' was published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama on January 6, 2026. During the launch event in Ancol by PDIP, Megawati was present along with several party officials including her children, Prananda Prabowo and Puan Maharani.
The book 'Spirit of Humanity' discusses several issues from Megawati's perspective, including environmental preservation, the impact of global warming, and the handling of natural and hydrometeorological disasters.
This book also discusses some of Megawati's track record in disaster management, including the establishment of PDIP's disaster wing, the Disaster Mitigation Body or Baguna, and transforming the Meteorology and Geophysics Body into the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Body.
The book was launched amidst recovery efforts in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Floods and landslides triggered by Tropical Cyclone Senyar occurred in the three provinces in Sumatra at the end of November 2025.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported a total of 1,182 fatalities as of Friday, January 9, 2025. BNPB detailed that there were 544 fatalities in Aceh, 372 in North Sumatra, and 264 in West Sumatra. Meanwhile, 145 people were declared missing, with 32 in Aceh, 42 in North Sumatra, and 72 in West Sumatra.
In these three provinces, there are still 238,627 evacuees, with 214,084 in Aceh, 13,689 in North Sumatra, and 10,854 in West Sumatra.
