Patrick Kluivert's Future on Hold: PSSI Awaits Chair Erick Thohir After World Cup Exit

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has postponed a decision regarding the future of head coach Patrick Kluivert following the national team's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. A PSSI Executive Committee (Exco) meeting to address the matter has not yet been scheduled, as the association awaits the availability of Chair Erick Thohir.

PSSI Deputy Chair I Zainuddin Amali confirmed the meeting will not take place this week, explaining that Erick is occupied with his daughter's wedding celebration.

"We have to wait for the Chair. He still has a wedding to attend. He’s going to marry off his daughter. The wedding is on October 18 and 19," Amali told reporters on Monday, October 13, 2025, after watching the Indonesian U-23 national team's friendly match against India at Gelora Bung Karno Madya Stadium in Jakarta.

Earlier that day, Sumardji, manager of the Indonesian national team and Chair of the National Team Body (BTN), stated that the fate of Kluivert and his coaching staff would soon be decided at a PSSI Exco meeting, citing the Dutch coach's poor record.

Kluivert, who was recruited to replace Shin Tae-yong, failed to guide the Garuda squad to the 2026 World Cup after consecutive losses in the fourth round: 2-3 to Saudi Arabia and 0-1 to Iraq. These results guarantee Indonesia a third-place finish in Group B, eliminating them from contention. Only a second-place finish would have offered a chance to advance to the fifth round or playoffs.

Amali confirmed that the PSSI will determine the appropriate steps to address the World Cup failure only after receiving a complete and official report from the BTN Chair and team manager. "We’ll wait for the report from the BTN Chairman and the manager. Then we’ll take a stance. We don't know what the report will be like yet," he said.

He stressed that the PSSI cannot unilaterally decide Kluivert's fate, despite significant public pressure to terminate the 49-year-old coach immediately. "No. This is an organization. We have to make decisions together," Amali emphasized. "The basis for our decision at the Exco meeting will be the report from the BTN Chair, who is also the national team manager."

When asked if there was a deadline for the Exco meeting, Amali simply replied, "There's no time limit. It's as soon as we're ready." He added that he was unaware of why Kluivert and his staff chose to return to the Netherlands immediately after the two fourth-round qualifying matches.
