TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lebanon's Minister of Social Affairs, Haneen El Sayed, said that approximately 400,000 displaced residents have returned to their homes in southern Lebanon, while many others remain unable to return due to widespread destruction.
El Sayed made the remarks on Saturday, July 4, while visiting the southern Lebanese city of Tyre. During the visit, she met with officials from the Union of Municipalities of Tyre district and the region's disaster management unit, according to the Lebanese National News Agency.
According to El Sayed, as quoted from Antara citing Anadolu, while the ceasefire remains fragile, southern Lebanon is beginning to see the return of displaced residents.
She explained that the purpose of her visit was to assess conditions on the ground and listen to the challenges facing local communities as part of preparing a broader plan for repatriation, recovery, and reconstruction.
El Sayed noted that the Lebanese government's financial capacity remains limited. Therefore, Beirut will appeal to the international community for financial support to initiate reconstruction projects and provide urgent assistance to affected families.
The minister also stated that the government is working to provide rental assistance to displaced families who have not yet been able to return to their homes.
Furthermore, the government is reviewing mechanisms to assist homeowners with minor damage through financial support for repairs, and is considering providing prefabricated housing units as a temporary solution.
Since March 2, Israel has been waging war in Lebanon that has killed 4,303 people and injured 12,202 others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The offensive has also displaced more than a million people.
