TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 hit the northern region of New Jersey on Saturday night, August 2, 2025. Tremors were felt in several parts of New York City, according to officials.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 22:18 local time and was centered in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, about six miles below the surface. Although relatively small, the earthquake was strong enough to cause tremors felt in several surrounding areas, including parts of Manhattan and Bronx.
The New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) issued a statement shortly after the incident. They stated that they were monitoring and investigating the incident.
"Prepare for the possibility of aftershocks. These aftershocks may occur minutes, hours, or even days after the initial earthquake," the NYCEM statement said in an update quoted by Russia Today. The agency added that residents do not need to take cover but should still check for potential hazards.
No injuries or damages were reported until Saturday night. Officials said they were continuing to assess the situation in coordination with emergency partners.
The USGS suggested that a 3.0 magnitude earthquake rarely causes significant structural damage. Nevertheless, tremors can be felt, particularly in densely populated urban infrastructure areas such as metropolitan New York.
Residents who felt the tremors were urged to check their homes or workplaces for shifted items, falling debris, or cracks in the walls and foundations.
A resident in Brooklyn, New York described it as a very brief tremor, just a momentary slight shake. However, social media immediately buzzed with activity. The official Empire State Building account reported the incident via the X social platform.
The earthquake was much milder compared to the one in 2024, which had a 4.8 Richter scale magnitude and struck Tewksbury, New Jersey, slightly further west of the city.
