TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of protestors gathered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Friday, October 24, 2025, to reject Donald Trump's presence at the ASEAN Summit. The protest was led by Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), the largest opposition party in Malaysia, and attended by pro-Palestinian activists.
According to reports from CNA, the crowd began to gather after Friday prayers at around 02:00 p.m. local time, in front of Menara Tabung Haji, in the city center of Kuala Lumpur. Most of the participants wore all black while carrying Palestine flags. Some of them raised placards that read "Dump Trump" and "Trump you are not welcome".
The crowd then headed to the United States Embassy on Jalan Tun Razak, about 700 meters from the starting point, shouting chants of "Get out Donald Trump" and "Free Palestine".
In addition to the protest on Friday, at least one other demonstration of "Trump You're Not Welcome in Malaysia" will be held on Sunday in the Ampang Park area, near the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), where the ASEAN Summit will take place.
The demonstration is planned to be joined by various civil society groups and political parties, including BDS Malaysia, Global Progressive Solidarity (SSP), Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA).
Trump's First Visit in a Decade
Donald Trump is scheduled to arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday morning, October 26, to attend the ASEAN Summit and a series of meetings that will take place until October 28, 2025. This is the first visit of a US president to Malaysia in the last ten years, following Barack Obama's visit in 2015.
Trump's last attendance at the ASEAN Summit was in 2017 in the Philippines during his first term in office. He then was absent from subsequent meetings, which raised questions about the US commitment to the Southeast Asian region.
Malaysian Government's Response
In response to the planned protest, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that the people are free to express their opinions as long as they do not disrupt the conference. "This is a free country. They can do it, but they cannot disrupt the organisation and the process and the security of the area," he said last Wednesday.
According to Free Malaysia Today, on September 27, Anwar defended the Malaysian government's decision to invite Trump to the ASEAN Summit. He emphasized that Malaysia will continue to use diplomatic channels to voice concerns about the situation in Palestine, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The statement was made in response to criticism from former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who urged the withdrawal of the invitation to Trump due to the US support for Israel.
