Malaysia Announces Plan to Adjust Subsidized Fuel Quota

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Malaysia is looking to adjust the purchase quota for subsidized RON 95 petrol from 300 liters to 200 liters per person per month.

“The government will adjust the RON 95 quota from 300 liters per month to 200 liters per month, effective April 1, 2026,” said Anwar Ibrahim in a statement observed in Kuala Lumpur on late Thursday, March 26, 2026, as quoted from Antara.

This decision was made after the Malaysian government discovered that the average monthly consumption of RON 95 petrol is 100 liters per person, meaning that nearly 90 percent of Malaysians use less than 200 liters of RON 95 petrol per month.

Based on this, the fuel purchase quota has been reduced from a maximum of 300 liters per person per month to 200 liters per person per month.

This decision was also taken to strengthen Malaysia’s ability to handle potential crises. The decision was also made amid several viral incidents on social media highlighting the misuse of subsidized petrol purchases.

Under the regulations, subsidized RON 95 petrol, priced at 1.99 ringgit (Rp8,437) per liter, is exclusively available to Malaysian citizens holding valid identity cards.

Meanwhile, foreign nationals are charged the standard RON 95 price of approximately 3.87 ringgit (Rp16,389) per liter, and vehicles with non-Malaysian license plates—such as those from Singapore—are required to purchase RON 97 fuel priced at approximately 5.15 ringgit (Rp21,812) per liter.

For ride-share drivers, the Malaysian government continues to provide a purchase quota for subsidized RON 95 fuel of up to 800 liters per month.

Antara's investigation in Kuala Lumpur found that several ride-share drivers appreciated the policy, but the upper limit is only eligible for drivers after a certain distance.

If the vehicle’s mileage falls short of the requirement, the purchase quota will be adjusted.

Furthermore, Anwar Ibrahim stated that the purchase quota for subsidized RON 95 petrol for small land transport vehicles—whether public, freight, or private—is also capped at a maximum of 50 liters per purchase.

This provision is intended to ensure that supplies remain available and can be distributed fairly and sufficiently.

“Without this adjustment, we are concerned about continued hoarding and smuggling,” he said.

Anwar also announced that Malaysian oil tankers are now permitted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, extending his gratitude to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for this.

Despite the potential for crisis persisting, the Malaysian government has decided to keep the price of subsidized RON 95 petrol at 1.99 ringgit per liter.
