TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lionel Messi suffered an injury as Inter Miami defeated Necaxa in the second round of the League Cup 2025. The Argentine player left the field in the 11th minute and headed straight to the dressing room at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
As reported by ESPN, Messi collided with Necaxa's Raul Sanchez and Alexis Pena while dribbling into the penalty box before falling. Inter Miami's captain attempted to walk off the field for a few minutes, but eventually requested medical assistance and left the match. In his place, coach Javier Mascherano brought in Federico Redondo.
A minute after Messi's departure, his team scored a goal through Telaso Segovia from a pass by Rodrigo de Paul. However, in the 17th minute, Inter Miami had to play with ten players after Maximiliano Falcon received a red card.
Despite being a player down, Necaxa managed to equalize in the 33rd minute through Tomas Badaloni. This goal resulted in a 1-1 draw at the end of the first half.
In the second half, Necaxa also played with ten players after Cristian Calderon received a red card. Despite being on equal footing in player numbers, they were able to score a second goal through Ricardo Monreal, taking the lead in the 81st minute.
Just as the visiting team seemed poised to take home a victory from Inter Miami's home ground, Jordi Alba scored the equalizing goal in the 90+2 minute, resulting in a 2-2 draw. The score remained unchanged until the end of normal time, leading to a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Inter Miami emerged victorious with a score of 5-4. Their first five penalty takers successfully executed their tasks. Meanwhile, in the Necaxa camp, Tomas Badaloni failed to convert his penalty.
In the first match, Inter Miami defeated Atlas with a score of 2-1 on Thursday, July 31. In that match, the victory was sealed with a goal by Marcelo Waigandt in the 90+6 minute. Prior to that, Telaso Segovia had given The Herons the lead in the 57th minute, which was equalized by Rivaldo Lozano in the 80th minute.
Next, Inter Miami will face Pumas Unam in the third and final group stage match on Thursday morning, WIB, August 7, 2025. Mascherano's squad will compete once again at Chase Stadium.
