Job Fair Chaos in Bekasi: Netizens Demand VP Gibran Fulfill 19 Million Job Promise

1 day ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of job seekers flocked to the Job Fair Bekasi Pasti Kerja 2025, organized by the Bekasi District Manpower Office (Disnaker) at President University, Jababeka Convention Centre, Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java, on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. A widely shared video on social media showed crowds pushing and causing disorder.

Bekasi Regent Ade Kuswara Kunang said the overwhelming turnout was a moral challenge for the Regional Government (Pemda). Although the job fair offered around 2,000 vacancies, over 25,000 job seekers showed up.

"This means future job fairs must provide more than 2,000 vacancies," Ade said in Jababeka on Tuesday, May 27, as quoted by Antara.

The overcrowding sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many netizens urging Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka to deliver on his promise of creating 19 million job opportunities.

One Twitter user (@Arta*****) posted on Wednesday, May 28: "The sight of thousands of job seekers at the Cikarang Job Fair on 27/5/2025 shows Jokowi’s promise of 10 million jobs was false, and so is Gibran’s promise of 19 million."

Another user (@Soc********) wrote on Tuesday, May 27: "Is it really this hard to find work? Thousands queued from early morning at the Cikarang job fair, pushing just to get in. This reminds me of the 19 million job promises made during the campaign."

@Kang******** tweeted on Tuesday, May 27: "Job Fair Cikarang Jababeka. Many people fainted @gibran_tweet" (tagging Gibran’s account).

Previously, Gibran pledged to create 19 million jobs, including 5 million environmentally friendly “green jobs,” during the vice-presidential debate hosted by Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU).

He said these jobs would be realized if programs like downstreaming, green energy transition, equitable development, the creative economy, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are effectively implemented.

"God willing, there will be 19 million job opportunities for youth and women, 5 million of which will be green jobs," Gibran said at the Jakarta Convention Center on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

He described green jobs as roles focused on environmental sustainability and highlighted them as a current and future employment trend.

Regarding downstreaming, Gibran stressed the need to expand beyond mining to include agriculture, maritime, and digital sectors.

"Basically, we must no longer export raw materials," he added.
