TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that he had nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, saying he submitted a letter to the prize committee addressed to the U.S. President.
"He’s forging peace as we speak, in one country, in one region after the other," Netanyahu said during a dinner with Trump at the White House, according to reports by The Times of Israel and Arab News.
Netanyahu then stood up and surprised Trump by handing him the nomination letter across the table.
“It’s well deserved, and you should get it,” Netanyahu said.
“This I didn’t know. Wow,” Trump replied after reading the letter. “Coming from you in particular, this is very meaningful.”
Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times over the years by loyal supporters and members of parliament. He has previously expressed frustration about not receiving the prestigious award.
The Republican Party has criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee for overlooking Trump’s role as a mediator in conflicts such as those between India and Pakistan, and Serbia and Kosovo.
Trump has also sought recognition for his efforts in maintaining peace between Egypt and Ethiopia, and for mediating the Abraham Accords, a set of agreements aimed at normalizing diplomatic ties between Israel and several Arab nations.
He promoted his presidential campaign as that of a "peace bringer" who would quickly resolve the wars in Ukraine and Gaza using his negotiation skills, although both conflicts persisted for more than five months during his term.
