TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Military Chief Eyal Zamir is considering resigning if stalled negotiations with the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, fail to progress, according to media reports on Friday.
Newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, as quoted by Anadolu, reported that Zamir has reached a critical point in his relationship with Israeli political leaders. He mentioned that resignation may be his only option if the deadlock continues.
This dispute has surpassed routine institutional friction, he said, with several Cabinet ministers suspected of making disparaging remarks about the military during Cabinet meetings.
Channel 12 TV said that Zamir is "fed up" with the political-military rift and has asked the government to make a clear decision on the continuation of the Gaza conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has avoided committing to a firm policy, the report said, placing the entire burden of the Gaza situation on the military.
The rift revolves around the fate of Israeli prisoners in Gaza and the continuation of military operations without a clear political roadmap.
Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has launched a brutal assault on Gaza since October 7, 2023, killing over 60,000 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children. Relentless bombardment has devastated the enclave and caused food shortages.
