TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, believes that the efforts to combat online gambling in Indonesia have still not been optimal. According to him, the efforts undertaken by the government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto in the past year have not been effective enough in preventing and cracking down on this criminal activity.

"A year after the Red and White Cabinet started working, we have to honestly admit that the prevention and eradication of online gambling is still not optimal," said Yusril during a dissemination event titled 'Strengthening the Anti-Money Laundering Committee in Preventing and Combating Money Laundering (TPPU) Related to Online Gambling' at the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) building in Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, 4th November 2025.

Yusril highlighted the freedom of online gambling operators to continue their operations through various means. He pointed out that the enforcement against online gambling has often been hindered because it has only been focused on the perpetrators and platforms, whereas the financial networks behind it have not been fully tackled.

Therefore, Yusril stated that the government will implement the approach of combating money laundering (TPPU) to eradicate gambling. Through this approach, law enforcement officials can combine investigations and prosecutions of online gambling cases with anti-money laundering efforts.

"Through this approach, the government can track, freeze, and seize the proceeds of crime used to finance and expand online gambling operations," he said. In the effort to combat online gambling using the TPPU approach, Yusril mentioned that the PPATK plays a significant role in examining and temporarily suspending suspicious financial transactions allegedly related to gambling.

Moreover, Yusril also aims to strengthen cooperation between countries to prevent and combat online gambling. He believes that the efforts to prevent and combat online gambling in Indonesia have not been optimal. He highlighted the freedom of gambling operators to continue their operations through various means. "Online gambling is not just conventional gambling such as betting or cockfighting, but it is transnational organized crime," he said.

During the event, the Chair of PPATK, Ivan Yustiavandana, stated that the total turnover or transactions of online gambling in Indonesia reached Rp155 trillion from January to October 2025. Ivan claimed that this figure had significantly decreased compared to last year's online gambling transactions, which reached Rp359 trillion. "Compared to last year, which was a full 12 months at Rp359 trillion, now, almost in the 12th month, we have successfully reduced it to Rp155 trillion," he said.

He also claimed that the amount of online gambling deposits this year had been reduced to Rp24 trillion. This figure is lower than the deposits made last year, which reached Rp51 trillion.

Ivan mentioned that the online gambling operators were predominantly individuals with incomes in the range of Rp5 million per month. "The operators, the players, are still our brothers and sisters with incomes of Rp5 million and below per month," he said.
