TEMPO.COJakarta Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed the death of Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmaeil Khatib on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

"The cowardly assassination of my dear colleagues Esmaeil Khatib, (Secretary of the Iranian Security Council) Ali Larijani and (Defense Minister) Aziz Nasirzadeh, as well as some members of their families and those accompanying them, plunged us into sorrow," President Pezeshkian said on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, as cited by Sputnik and reported by Antara.

The Iranian president had previously vowed harsh revenge for Larijani's assassination, the Iranian presidential office said on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had also previously said that Larijani was killed in an Israeli strike in Tehran. Larijani's death was later confirmed by his office.

"What awaits the terrorist criminals who stained their hands with the blood of oppressed yet brave martyrs on the sacred soil of Iran is harsh revenge," Pezeshkian said in a statement.
