TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted rain of varying intensity across Indonesia this Thursday, March 19, ranging from light showers to very heavy downpours. According to forecaster Rizky, atmospheric dynamics are driving these conditions, prompting a call for public vigilance against potential extreme weather.
Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in East Nusa Tenggara, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Maluku, and South Papua.
"Meanwhile, rain accompanied by lightning is predicted in several major cities such as Padang, Jambi, Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Semarang, Banjarmasin, Samarinda, Tanjung Selor, as well as Kendari and Merauke in eastern Indonesia," Rizky stated during a broadcast on the agency's YouTube channel.
Light rain is also possible for several other urban centers, including Medan, Pekanbaru, Serang, Bandung, Pontianak, Palangkaraya, Denpasar, Kupang, Palu, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, Ambon, and much of Papua.
Conversely, sunny to partly cloudy skies are forecast for Yogyakarta, Banda Aceh, Tanjung Pinang, Bengkulu, and Mataram, while hazy air may affect Bandar Lampung.
In the capital, the BMKG predicts rain will hit parts of Jakarta from Thursday afternoon through the evening. Based on the @infobmkg social media page, West and North Jakarta will remain partly cloudy from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with light rain beginning between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. By 10:00 p.m., these areas are expected to be thickly cloudy.
Similar conditions apply to East and South Jakarta. However, at 4:00 p.m., these two areas may experience moderate intensity rain before lightning by 7:00 p.m.
In Central Jakarta, the agency predicts sunny skies until 10:00 a.m., shifting to partly cloudy by 1:00 p.m. Following the regional trend, light rain will fall from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by heavy cloud cover.
Finally, in the Seribu Islands, the weather will transition from cloudy in the morning to sunny with clouds by 4:00 p.m. Heavy clouds are expected to return to the islands from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The BMKG urged the public to increase their vigilance regarding these shifting conditions. "Make sure to always update weather information through the bmkg.go.id website and our social media at @info.bmkg," Rizky concluded.
