TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported on Thursday, March 26, that more than 350 ships are currently awaiting Iranian permission to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, some 27 days after the outbreak of the war involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
Citing field developments, as reported by Xinhua, Fars stated that the strategic waterway remains closed to the U.S., Israel, and their allies. No vessels are permitted to pass without explicit permission from Iran.
According to the report, these ships have been ordered to deactivate their tracking systems and remain stationary.
The backlog includes 25 supertankers, 200 oil tankers, and 70 LNG and CNG carriers, Fars noted, adding that without Iran's approval, these vessels can neither continue their transit nor dock at regional ports, as the maritime route remains under the full control of the Iranian armed forces.
In a post on the social media platform X on Tuesday, March 24, Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, emphasized that any ship traversing the Strait of Hormuz must maintain full coordination with Iranian maritime authorities.
The current crisis follows a joint attack launched by Israel and the U.S. on February 28, targeting Tehran and several other Iranian cities, which resulted in the deaths of Iran's then-Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, alongside senior military commanders and civilians.
In response, Iran launched a wave of missile and drone strikes against Israeli and U.S. bases and assets across the Middle East while tightening its grip on the Strait of Hormuz to block all vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States.
