Iran Rebuffs Trump's Claim of Meeting Request Amid Escalating Tensions

4 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has denied a statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, regarding Iran's request for a meeting to discuss Tehran's nuclear program.

"We have not submitted any request to the US side regarding a meeting," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, in remarks carried by the state-run Tasnim news agency and reported by Anadolu.

Trump had claimed on Monday that Washington was set to hold nuclear negotiations with Iran. "We have scheduled Iran talks, and they want to talk," Trump told reporters at the White House, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Adding to the confusion, Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, reportedly stated that he would meet with Iranian diplomats "next week or so," as quoted by Al Arabiya.

Trump himself admitted he did not fully see the purpose of the negotiations, given his belief that Tehran's nuclear program had been destroyed.

He added, "But [the Iranians] requested a meeting, and I’m going to go to a meeting, and if we can put something down on paper, that will be fine," as reported by the Times of Israel.

He reiterated his assertion that Iran's nuclear program had already been "obliterated."

Trump also drew a controversial parallel between his ordered attack on Iran and the U.S. dropping atomic bombs on Japan during World War II.

"I don’t want to say what it reminded me of, but if you go back a long time ago, it reminded people of a certain other event, and Harry Truman’s picture is now in the [White House] lobby," he said, referencing the U.S. president who authorized the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

"That stopped a lot of fighting, and this stopped a lot of fighting," Trump stated, while emphasizing that the U.S. would not use nuclear weapons against Iran.

He clarified that the US had used large bombs, but 'non-nuclear,'" adding, "and we want to keep it non-nuclear." Trump stressed that Iran now has a different mindset and has garnered "a lot of respect" toward the U.S. and Israel.
