TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Sukhoi Su-30 MK2 fighter jet skidded off the runway at Sultan Hasanuddin Air Base in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Monday, August 24, 2026. The incident took place while the Russian-made aircraft was undergoing a test flight following major maintenance work.

Head of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) Information Service, First Marshal I Nyoman Suadnyana, explained that the jet was performing simulated takeoff checks along the tarmac as part of its testing sequence. However, a technical failure in the braking system caused the aircraft to overrun the safe operational area.

"The braking system failed to function optimally, causing the aircraft to slide 30 meters past the end of the runway," Suadnyana said when contacted on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Nyoman confirmed that no injuries or fatalities occurred during the mishap. All crew members aboard the aircraft were reported safe. Air Force ground personnel responded immediately, towing the fighter jet back to the hangar for further inspection.

"The aircraft was towed to the maintenance hangar for inspection and prep work ahead of the next test flight," Suadnyana added.

Before official statements were issued, footage of the incident recorded by residents had already gone viral across social media platforms. In the video clips, the Sukhoi jet is seen skidding off the western edge of Runway 13. The fighter jet finally came to a standstill near the air base’s perimeter fence.
