TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The next match for the Indonesian U-23 national football team will be the qualification round for the 2026 Asia U-23 Cup, scheduled for September 3–9. Indonesia, placed in Group J with South Korea, Macau, and Laos, will serve as host of the tournament.
In preparation for the qualifiers at Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo, East Java, the call-up of players for the Indonesian U-23 squad begins today, Monday, August 18, 2025.
U-23 Team Manager Zaki Iskandar previously stated that 30 players would be called up for the qualification matches. At that time, he did not disclose specific names. He noted, however, that it was possible to include Indonesian players currently playing in Europe such as Justin Hubner and Marselino Ferdinan.
"Wait for the names that will be announced by the head coach," said Zaki, who also serves as President of Persita Tangerang, when contacted by Tempo on Saturday night, August 2, 2025.
The qualifiers involve 44 teams divided into 11 groups of four. Only the group winners and the four best runners-up will advance to the final round, which will take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to 25, 2026. Saudi Arabia automatically qualifies as host.
The qualification matches will be held in 11 countries, including Jordan, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, Cambodia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Tajikistan.
Before the qualifiers, Indonesia competed in the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup. Under coach Vanenburg, the team finished runner-up after a 1-0 loss to Vietnam in the final on July 29. The upcoming Asia U-23 Cup qualifiers will be Vanenburg’s second tournament in charge of the Indonesian U-23 team.
