TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The players and coaches of the Indonesian U-23 national team are still receiving hundreds of millions of rupiah in bonuses despite failing to win the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup title. The Garuda Muda squad lost 0-1 to Vietnam in the final match on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
In the match held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta, Kadek Arel and his teammates conceded a goal in the 37th minute by Nguyen Cong Phuong. The goal originated from a corner kick that resulted in chaos in front of the goal and was not well anticipated by Garuda Muda.
Jens Raven and his teammates tried to increase their attacking intensity to score an equalizer. However, they failed to capitalize on several opportunities until the end of the match.
Minister of Public Works and Public Housing of the Republic of Indonesia Maruarar Sirait stated that the Indonesian U-23 national team should still receive appreciation in the form of bonuses despite their failure. After speaking with his son, Yoshua Sirait, the man affectionately called Ara revealed that he would provide a bonus of Rp100 million for each player and Rp300 million for each coach.
Ara explained his reason for giving the bonuses, stating, "Like President Prabowo (Subianto) always says, the spirit to strive for the best. Earlier, we talked to my son Yoshua, what if we also continue to pay attention, even though our national team has not succeeded, we will give a bonus of 100 million rupiah to each player, and to the coach, one coach will receive 300 million rupiah," he said when he met with the media after the match at SUGBK, on Tuesday.

The 55-year-old man, who is also the Chairman of the Steering Committee for the 2025 President's Cup pre-season tournament, stated that the hundreds of millions of rupiah in bonuses come from his personal funds. "Yes, the money is from my personal funds. So, I am very proud of what they have achieved, and to rise again, we are together, and you are not alone. I support with all my heart," said the man.
This defeat marks Indonesia's second defeat in the ASEAN U-23 Championship final. Previously, in the 2023 edition in Thailand, Indonesia, led by Shin Tae-yong at that time, also failed after being defeated by Vietnam in the final. At that time, Garuda Muda lost 5-6 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw. Indonesia previously won the AFF U-23 title in 2019 under the guidance of Indra Sjafri.
"In life, winning and losing is normal. They can accept today, and I believe in the future, with prayers and efforts, they can rise again," Ara said.
In a different context, PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir responded positively to Ara's actions. "Pak Ara is part of PSSI, he is the chairman of the President's Cup. So, if there are philanthropists who love football, it is a blessing, right, Minister of Youth and Sports (Dito Ariotedjo)?" Erick said.
When asked whether PSSI will also provide bonuses to the Indonesian U-23 national team, Erick stated, "There will be, surely." He then mentioned that the appreciation to be given would come in the form of bonuses, but he did not disclose the amount of the bonuses.
