TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has shut down 1,004 piracy websites since January 2025, according to the Directorate General of Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Law.
Director General of Intellectual Property Hermansyah Siregar said the government is committed to cracking down on copyright infringement in the digital domain. The agency has ramped up its supervision and law enforcement, he said.
"Digital piracy not only harms creators and copyright holders but also hinders the growth of the national creative economy," said Hermansyah in a written statement on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
Hermansyah stated that the majority of violations came from pirated film and television series providers, totaling 401 sites throughout 2025.
Additionally, there were 258 sites that hosted digital books and comics without copyright; 198 sites infringed on broadcasting rights; and 28 sites had various other copyright infringements shut down throughout 2025.
In 2026, the agency blocked 119 sites, bringing the total to 1,004 sites closed.
The government's measures to close down copyright infringement sites are carried out based on several regulations pertaining to copyrights and IP violations.
Hermansyah urged copyright holders and the public to actively participate in combating digital piracy by reporting sites hosting pirated content. "Requests for site closure recommendations can be submitted through the complaint page of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property at pengaduan.dgip.go.id."
