TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is ready to host a dialogue between the conflicting parties in Myanmar, said Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, as part of Indonesia's bid to support reconciliation in the country.
“We are ready if Indonesia is chosen to host it. I think Indonesia is also more acceptable for that position,” Sugiono said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Following the 6th Indonesia-Vietnam Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting, Sugiono said Indonesia's readiness was conveyed during an informal meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers with Myanmar in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday, July 12.
According to Sugiono, the meeting focused on the implementation of the Five Point Consensus (5PC), adding that ASEAN member states continue to strive to resolve the conflict in Myanmar in an inclusive manner.
He explained that any progress in efforts to achieve peace in Myanmar is commendable, although he acknowledged that the complexity of the situation in Myanmar means that implementing the 5PC will take time.
Furthermore, Sugiono underscored the importance of a derivative mechanism within ASEAN to ensure that progress on the implementation of the 5PCs in Myanmar can be reviewed more concretely.
For example, he mentioned whether the parameters for a cessation of violence, as mandated by the 5PCs, would include a cessation at every point or across the entire country to meet ASEAN requirements.
At the meeting, Sugiono believed that the implementation of the 5PCs in Myanmar still faces various challenges, including the realization of an inclusive dialogue, which he deemed crucial for national reconciliation efforts amidst the ongoing civil war.
"An inclusive national dialogue involving all stakeholders is the key to sustainable peace and national reconciliation," he said.
He said the 5PC should remain ASEAN's main framework for ending violence, promoting inclusive dialogue and ensuring safe, impartial delivery of humanitarian assistance.
