TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has issued a statement saying that it is involved in operations targeting preman or thugs. Head of the Attorney General’s Legal Information Center Harli Siregar said one of the efforts includes deploying intelligence instruments.
The use of intelligence, Harli said, is carried out at the level of preventing thug behavior, or premanisme. "We have intelligence instruments that will continue to enhance the process of socializing with community organizations," Harli said at the Attorney General’s Office, South Jakarta, Wednesday, May 14.
Harli added that the Adhyaksa institution has a role in maintaining public order. Therefore, he said, the AGO will support President Prabowo Subianto’s desire to eradicate thug behavior.
Earlier, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said President Prabowo Subianto was concerned about the rise of thug activity. Prabowo has coordinated with National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Attorney General ST. Burhanuddin to address this issue.
"So, the president and the government are genuinely concerned. The president has coordinated with the National Police Chief and the Attorney General. They are coordinating to find a solution," he said at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, Friday, May 9.
Following the president's order, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo issued Telegram Letter No. STR/1081/IV/OPS.1.3./2025 addressed to regional and district police commands. The letter contains instructions for an operation to eradicate thug activity using intelligence, preemptive, and preventive measures, starting this May.
