TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has strongly condemned what it described as a second deadly Israeli attack on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, after two Indonesian members of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were killed and two others wounded while on duty near Bani Haiyyan on Monday, March 30.

“Indonesia mourns the loss of its fallen peacekeepers and stands in solidarity with their families, while wishing a swift recovery to those injured.,” Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on X on Tuesday, as monitored in Jakarta.

Jakarta said the repeated attack on UNIFIL personnel was “completely unacceptable” and stressed that the safety and security of UN peacekeepers are non-negotiable.

“The recurrence of such heinous attacks against Indonesian peacekeepers within a short span of time is utterly unacceptable. This cannot be treated as an isolated occurrence, but reflects a rapidly deteriorating security environment in southern Lebanon, where ongoing Israeli military operations have placed United Nations peacekeepers at grave risk,” the ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry also reiterated Indonesia’s condemnation of Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, saying they have significantly heightened the risks faced by UN peacekeepers and undermined the implementation of UNIFIL’s mandate under UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

"Indonesia continues to strongly condemn Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, which have significantly increased the risks faced by UN peacekeepers and undermined the implementation of UNIFIL’s mandate under Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006)."

Indonesia stressed that any act endangering UN peacekeepers constitutes a serious violation of international law and must not go unanswered.

"The safety and security of UN peacekeepers is non-negotiable. Any harm against them constitutes a serious violation of international law and must not go unanswered."

Indonesia also called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation to establish the facts, including the circumstances of the attack and those responsible, stressing that full accountability must follow.

The latest incident came a day after an Indonesian UN peacekeeper was killed by artillery fire near the Indonesian UNIFIL contingent’s position in Adchit Al Qusayr, southern Lebanon, on Sunday, March 29. Private First Class Farizal Rhomadhon was confirmed dead in that attack, while three other Indonesian personnel — Rico Pramudia, Bayu Prakoso, and Arif Kurniawan — were injured.

The United Nations reported that two more Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeepers were killed and two others wounded when a UNIFIL logistics convoy was hit near Bani Haiyyan in southern Lebanon on Monday.

According to UNIFIL and Reuters, the blast of “unknown origin” destroyed their vehicle, marking the second deadly incident involving the mission in less than 24 hours.

With the latest fatalities, three Indonesian peacekeepers have now been killed while serving on the UN mission in southern Lebanon within the past 24 hours.
