Indonesia Now a Global Benchmark in Food Sector, Minister Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman claimed Indonesia is increasingly being recognized as a global reference in the food sector, highlighting the country’s success in achieving food self-sufficiency.

“Many countries come to learn from Indonesia, from Japan and Canada to Belarus. This proves we are on the right path toward food self-sufficiency,” Amran said during the opening of the 26th Bugis-Makassar Traders Meeting (PSBM) 2026 in Makassar on Thursday.

However, he warned that a global food crisis remains a real threat that could undermine national stability. Dependence on imports, he added, carries not only economic consequences but also political pressure. “One million tons of rice imports can create significant leverage for exporting countries,” he stressed.

Amran also emphasized the importance of hard work alongside prayer. “Prayer without action equals zero. Success is not free. We must unite and work with purpose,” he told PSBM participants.

The minister highlighted several strategic government programs, including energy-saving initiatives and the downstream processing of key commodities.

Coconut downstreaming, for example, is estimated to have an economic potential of around Rp5,000 trillion. Other commodities, such as gambier, also offer downstream potential of up to Rp5,000 trillion.

Indonesia has also strengthened its position as a global leader in the palm oil market, a testament to the country’s capacity to lead in both food and agribusiness sectors. In a historic milestone, Indonesia exported 10,000 tons of rice to Palestine, marking the first-ever shipment to the region.

“Food self-sufficiency is the key to national strength,” Amran said, calling on Bugis-Makassar traders to collaborate and play an active role in building a national economy rooted in local potential.
