TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s U-23 national football team failed to secure the AFF U-23 Cup 2025 title after a narrow 0-1 loss to Vietnam in the final held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
Despite being under heavy pressure from the Young Garuda early in the match, Vietnam managed to withstand the attacks. Jens Raven and his teammates were unable to find the back of the net.
Vietnam took the lead in the 37th minute when Nguyen Chong Phuong capitalized on a loose ball during a scramble in front of the Indonesian goal following a throw-in.
Indonesia attempted to respond by intensifying their offensive play, but their efforts did not yield an equalizer. The match ended with Vietnam holding onto their 1-0 lead.
With this victory, Vietnam clinched their third consecutive AFF U-23 Cup title, having previously won in 2022 and 2023. They now hold the record for the most titles in the tournament’s history, which has been held five times.
Indonesia, meanwhile, once again finished as runners-up after also losing to Vietnam in the 2023 final under coach Shin Tae-yong. The national U-23 team last won the title in 2019 under coach Indra Sjafri.
Final Match Summary
First Half
Indonesia started the match with high intensity, relying on Jens Raven to lead the attack. The Young Garuda kept pressing Vietnam’s defense but struggled to convert their chances.
Tensions ran high early in the game. Kadek Arel received a yellow card in the 14th minute after committing a foul.
In the 30th minute, Indonesia nearly scored when Rayhan found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper but failed to finish the chance.
Vietnam broke the deadlock in the 37th minute. Nguyen Chong Phuong fired a shot into the goal following a corner kick. Indonesia could not respond before the first half ended, and the score remained 1-0 in Vietnam’s favor.
Second Half
Both sides resumed the second half with the same line-up. Indonesia, trailing by a goal, pushed forward more aggressively.
In the 54th minute, tempers flared between players from both teams. Then in the 60th minute, coach Gerald Vanenburg substituted Frengki Missa with Ahmad Maulana Syarif, shifting Dony Tri Pamungkas back to the left-back position.
Indonesia continued to press. In the 77th minute, Kakang Rudianto failed to make the most of a close-range chance during a goalmouth scramble. His shot went over the bar.

Five minutes later, Hokky Caraka replaced Rahmat Arjuna. Kadek Arel also joined the attack in the closing minutes. However, Indonesia was unable to equalize before the final whistle.
