TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government provided bonuses to medal-winning athletes and coaches from the 2025 SEA Games. The total budget for the distributed bonuses amounted to Rp465.25 billion. Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir announced the rewards during the Award Ceremony for the 33rd SEA Games at the State Palace, Jakarta.
The event was attended by President Prabowo Subianto, heads of sports associations, and the medal-winning contingent on Thursday, January 8, 2026. Erick stated that the bonuses had been transferred to each recipient.
"We, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, directly transferred all the bonuses to each athlete and coach through Bank BRI," Erick said in his speech.
Erick mentioned that the medal count at this SEA Games exceeded the initial target of 80 gold medals. He stated that the Indonesian contingent surpassed that goal with 91 gold, 111 silver, and 131 bronze medals.
Erick expressed pride in the achievement of the Indonesian contingent, which secured second place in the total medal tally behind host country Thailand. He said it was the first time since 1995 that Indonesia reached second place in a SEA Games held abroad.
According to Erick, gold medalists in individual sports received a bonus of Rp1 billion. Meanwhile, individual silver medalists received Rp315 million and individual bronze medalists received Rp157 million.
Erick mentioned that bonuses for team contingents were calculated and allocated accordingly. "Even the coaches received bonuses," he added.
Prior to distributing the bonuses, Erick stated that the government provided financial literacy training to approximately 400 athletes and coaches. It is hoped the bonuses can be used for their future.
President Prabowo Subianto had previously promised bonuses to successful athletes at the 2025 SEA Games. In public, Prabowo mentioned the substantial budget the government prepared following the achievement of 91 gold medals.
Prabowo congratulated the Indonesian contingent. "On one hand, I am smiling with 91 gold medals, on the other hand, it's quite a headache. The bonuses are also substantial now," Prabowo said in Serang, Banten, on Saturday, December 20, 2025.
Nevertheless, the President emphasized the government's commitment to fulfilling the promise. He stated that leadership demands consistency between words and actions. "Sabdo Pandito Ratu. A leader's words must be upheld. It's okay to be happy while also struggling. What matters is that our fighters, we respect and appreciate them," Prabowo said.
