TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia emerged as a remarkable performer at the 17th South East Asian U18-U20 Athletics Championships in 2025, winning multiple medals in various categories. Held on November 15-18, 2025, at the Madya Athletics Stadium, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, the young athletes showcased consistent accomplishments against fellow contenders from Vietnam, Philippines, and other Southeast Asian countries.
Indonesia Becomes a General Champion for the First Time
During the three-day SEA athletics championship, the junior team from Indonesia successfully clinched 14 gold, 15 silver, and 16 bronze, placing the host country as the general champion.
According to RRI, a total of 220 athletes and 80 officials from all participants were involved in a tight competition across 63 track and field events. This year’s championship presented a full slate of competitions, including running, jumping, and throwing disciplines.
Tigor Tanjung, chair of the organizing committee for the 17th SEA Athletics Championship, lauded the seamless coordination that allowed the tournament to unfold without major setbacks. He underscored the competition’s pivotal role in honing the skills of emerging Indonesian athletes, positioning them for stronger performances on the global stage.
His optimism is bolstered by the use of the Madya Athletics Stadium, which recently secured a prestigious Class 1 Certificate from World Athletics to assure that the venue meets top-tier technical standards for national and international record-setting. The achievement, he noted, reflects Indonesia’s growing commitment to elevating its sporting infrastructure.
SEA Athletics Championship Viewed as a Foundation for Future Excellence
Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, chair of the Indonesian Athletics Association (PB PASI), underscored the championship’s role in elevating the region’s athletic landscape, portraying it as a cornerstone for long-term sports development.
“This championship is significant in developing athletics and the sports ecosystem in the region,” said Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, in Jakarta on Monday, November 10, as quoted by Antara.
Listed on the World Athletics global calendar and designated as a World Rankings Competition, the event ensures all official results feed into the international points system, providing young Indonesian athletes with a clearer pathway to Asian and world-level competitions.
Co-organized by PB PASI and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the championship also highlights the government-federation partnership behind Indonesia’s long-term athlete development strategy. Officials say this synergy is necessary as the country positions its rising talents for greater global exposure.
