TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has expressed strong rejection of the approval of the death penalty law for Palestinian prisoners by the Israeli parliament, Knesset. This stance was conveyed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through an official statement on social media X on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
The Republic of Indonesia government strongly condemns the approval of the Israeli Knesset of the law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners. The policy is unacceptable and violates the sense of justice and universal humanitarian values," said the ministry statement as cited by Tempo.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers the regulation to be a serious violation of human rights and international humanitarian law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which guarantee the right to life and a fair trial.
Law Violates International Law
The Indonesian government urges Israel to immediately revoke the law and stop policies that contradict international law. Indonesia also emphasizes the importance of protecting the basic rights of the Palestinian people, including prisoners.
"The Indonesian government urges Israel to immediately revoke the law and stop all actions that contradict international law, and ensure the protection of the basic rights of the Palestinian people, including prisoners," wrote the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In addition, Indonesia calls on the international community, especially the United Nations, to take firm steps to ensure accountability and protection for the Palestinian people. The government also reaffirms its support for the struggle of the Palestinian people to achieve independence, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Israel Approves Discriminatory Death Penalty Law
According to a report from Al Jazeera, the Israeli parliament has approved a controversial draft law. This rule instructs military courts to impose the death penalty on Palestinian citizens found guilty of killing Israelis in acts categorized as "terrorism."
The rule does not apply to Jewish Israelis who kill Palestinians.
The law was passed on Monday by 62 members out of a total of 120 Knesset members, with 48 votes against and one abstention. The rule will take effect within 30 days of approval.
The approval is a victory for the right-wing groups in Israel.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir pushed for the approval of this rule as part of a coalition agreement with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a session before the vote, he said, "From today, every terrorist will know, and the whole world will know, that whoever takes a life, the State of Israel will take their life."
