TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Batam Customs is re-exporting 25 containers carrying waste classified as hazardous and toxic materials through Batu Ampar Port. The measure is part of the ongoing efforts to handle containers failing to meet entry requirements to Indonesia.

As of Tuesday, January 27, 2026, a total of 21 containers owned by PT Logam Internasional Jaya have been sent back to their country of origin. "Four containers owned by PT Esun Internasional Utama Indonesia were also shipped out last week," said Evi Octavia, Head of Compliance Guidance and Information Services at Batam Customs, as quoted from the official website of the Directorate General of Customs, Saturday, January 31, 2026.

According to Evi, a total of 914 containers are suspected of carrying hazardous and toxic waste from three companies. To date, re-export requests for 49 containers have been approved, with 25 containers already shipped out.

Meanwhile, relevant parties have yet to submit re-export requests for 889 other containers. The Batam Customs urged owners of these cargos to promptly fulfill their obligations.

PT Esun Internasional Utama Indonesia owned 386 of these containers, and had only requested re-export for 19 containers. Four have been returned to their country of origin.

On the other hand, PT Logam Internasional Jaya has a total of 412 containers, with re-export requests submitted for 21 containers, all of which have been approved and sent out. Meanwhile, PT Batam Battery Recycle Industries, which owns 116 containers, has only submitted re-export requests for nine containers. Authorities have approved the requests.

Evi appreciates companies that have complied with the appeal, and hopes others will follow swiftly to prevent piling up and increased costs at the port.

Batam Customs ensures that the re-export process is carried out lawfully, working closely with BP Batam and the Department of Environment as part of the commitment to preserving the environment and resolving the handling of containers carrying hazardous and toxic waste in the region.
