IAEA Chief Warns Severe Radiation Risks Over Strikes Near Iran's Bushehr Plant

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), expressed "deep concern" over military strikes in the vicinity of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Iran, which could potentially trigger a major radiological incident.

In a statement on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the IAEA was informed of the military attacks that reportedly have struck the area around the facility, with the most recent occurring on Tuesday night.

Citing Anadolu, Grossi cautioned that any damage to Bushehr, an operating nuclear plant with large amount of nuclear material, could have severe implications.

Grossi warned that damage to the facility could cause a "a major radiological accident affecting a large area in Iran and beyond."

He called on the warring parties to exercise “maximum restraint” to prevent such risks.

Meanwhile, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) reported a new attack on the Bushehr NPP, but said there was no damage or casualties among staff, and the plant remains operational.

On March 17, a drone attack was also reported to hit the areas around the site, without causing damage or resulting in casualties.

Russia previously criticized the strikes near the Bushehr nuclear power plant, with the Foreign Ministry stating that Moscow was "extremely outraged" by the "reckless, irresponsible manifestation of a destructive course," as quoted from Anadolu.

"Washington and West Jerusalem must understand no less than we do – a hit on the Bushehr NPP would inevitably lead to irreversible humanitarian and environmental consequences," it stressed.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched attacks on targets across Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and killing civilians.

Iran subsequently retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and U.S. military facilities in the Middle East.

The U.S. and Israel initially stated that the “preemptive” strikes were necessary to counter the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program. But they have since emphasized their desire to see a change in leadership in the country.
