TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Siemens Mobility's latest generation of railway signaling systems, Signaling X, offers a new way to manage rail systems. Through its inaugural test at the Singapore Rail Test Center (SRTC), the company claims that this new technology centralizes transportation management, making it more energy-efficient.
Chief Executive Officer of Rail Infrastructure Siemens Mobility, Marc Ludwig, stated that the main advantage of Signaling X is that it gathers all system data in one place. Currently, the railway tracks in Singapore are controlled through distributed technology along the lines, with technology housed every few kilometers.
"Signaling X consolidates all of that technology into one place, into one data center," he said at the launch event at SRTC, Singapore, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
According to Ludwig, this centralized system enables operators to easily access all data and utilize artificial intelligence (AI) based analytics. Apart from operational efficiency, Ludwig mentioned that this technology also impacts resource and energy savings. "With less equipment, it consumes less energy," he said. "We expect to save up to 30 percent of energy with this technology," he added.
The Signaling X system is also supported by the Distributed Smart Safe System (DS3) safety technology. This feature allows crucial applications, such as interlocking and Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC), to run on standard industrial computers, eliminating the need for numerous devices on the track.
A real-time connected system allows operators to manage train operations more quickly and easily. Decision-making is claimed to be faster, scheduling and traffic control are more efficient, and passenger flow can be optimized. This capability is also suitable for densely populated urban networks such as Jakarta.
When asked about expansion to other countries, including Indonesia, Ludwig emphasized that their company is always ready. "We are ready when the customers are ready. We plan to expand Signaling X worldwide." He did not rule out using this system for the KRL Commuter Line, even though it still uses a fixed-block system rather than the CTBC system used by the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT).
In terms of security, CoreShield technology protects the system from cyber threats, data leaks, and unauthorized access. Furthermore, DS3's IoT connectivity and data analysis help detect potential disturbances before they occur. This reduces maintenance costs and minimizes downtime.
Ludwig also mentioned the virtualized system architecture that facilitates adding features without major changes to the physical infrastructure. Support for 4G, 5G, and WiFi communication ensures rapid data exchange between the track and the train, enhancing field operation responsiveness.
Signaling X is intended to help transportation operators reduce their carbon footprint by reducing physical devices on the track and optimizing energy usage. The system is also claimed to align with the vision of developing a more environmentally friendly public transportation system.
