TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, considered raising flags from the Japanese anime series One Piece ahead of Indonesia's 80th Anniversary to be an attempt to divide the nation. According to him, this phenomenon is part of a systematic movement.
"We have detected and received input from security institutions that there are indeed efforts to divide unity," he said at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
Dasco believes that certain groups desire a national setback, in contrast to the progress Indonesia is making under President Prabowo's leadership. The Executive Chair of the Gerindra Party appealed to the public to unite and resist these divisive efforts.
"We must resist such things. Let's unite and fight," he said.
Previously, some residents were seen flying One Piece flags on their homes and vehicles in the streets. They claimed the skull and crossbones flag was a symbol of mourning for the fading democratic principles practiced by the government.
