TEMPO.COJakarta - The Hong Kong Security Bureau updated its travel advice on its website on Saturday, November 15, 2025, citing a rising trend of attacks against Chinese nationals in Japan since mid-2025, according to a report by the Global Times.

Hong Kong residents planning to travel to Japan or those already in the country are advised to remain vigilant, prioritize personal safety, monitor local announcements for the latest developments, and follow the guidance issued by the Chinese embassy and consulates in Japan.

Last week, Mainland China also urged its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan. This followed diplomatic tensions sparked by a statement from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on November 7, 2025.

The Prime Minister's statement addressed the possibility of an attack on Taiwan, noting that a "Taiwan emergency" involving the use of military force could pose a situation threatening Japan's survival, based on its security laws. The law allows Japan to engage in collective self-defense under certain conditions.

The Macau government also took similar action on Saturday, referencing the travel warnings for visitors heading to Japan issued by Mainland China on its tourism office website.

Chinese Tourists in Japan

The number of foreign tourists visiting Japan between January and September 2025 increased by 17.7% from the previous year to around 31.65 million. This marks the fastest pace ever recorded, surpassing the 30 million mark in a single year. China has been the largest source of tourists to Japan throughout 2025, accounting for approximately 7.49 million visitors, an increase of 42.7% from the previous year.

Hong Kong also contributes a significant number of tourists to Japan. Data from the Japan National Tourism Organization shows that around 2.68 million tourists from Hong Kong visited Japan in 2024, ranking it the fifth largest source based on country or region. In July 2025, the number of tourists from Hong Kong decreased amid earthquake rumors, but the situation improved in the following months.
