Hamas Ready to Release All Israeli Hostages Under Ceasefire Deal

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A senior official of Hamas said on Monday, April 14, 2025, that the Palestinian fighter group is ready to release all Israeli hostages. As reported by Arab News, Taher Al-Nunu stated that this would be in exchange for a “serious prisoner swap” and a guarantee that Israel would end the war in Gaza.

Hamas is engaged in negotiations in Cairo with mediators from Egypt and Qatar, two countries collaborating with the United States to mediate a ceasefire in the besieged region.

“We are ready to release all Israeli captives in exchange for a serious prisoner swap deal, an end to the war, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and the entry of humanitarian aid,” said Taher Al-Nunu, a senior Hamas official.

However, he accused Israel of obstructing progress towards a ceasefire. “The issue is not the number of captives,” Nunu said, “but rather that the occupation is reneging on its commitments, blocking the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and continuing the war.”

“Hamas has therefore stressed the need for guarantees to compel the occupation (Israel) to uphold the agreement,” he added.

Israeli news site Ynet reported today that a new proposal has been submitted to Hamas.

Under the agreement, the group would release 10 live hostages in exchange for a U.S. guarantee that Israel would enter negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire.

The first phase of the ceasefire, which began on January 19 and involved several hostage-prisoner exchanges, lasted for two months before collapsing.

Efforts towards a new ceasefire have stalled, allegedly due to disputes over the number of hostages to be released by Hamas. On March 18, Israel used this pretext to break the ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Nunu stated that Hamas would not disarm, a key demand set by Israel to end the war.

“The weapons of the resistance are not up for negotiation,” Nunu said.

Israeli opposition politicians, former military officials, and families of hostages accuse Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of waging war for his political interests.

While some members of Netanyahu's cabinet have called for the voluntary migration of Palestinians from Gaza, which, according to human rights activists, is a euphemism for ethnic cleansing.

The Gaza genocide broke out after Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, against Israel. The attack resulted in the death of 1,218 people according to Israel's official figures. However, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant admitted that some of the victims on that day were killed by the Israeli military under the Hannibal Directive, which prohibits the abduction of Israeli citizens alive.

The militants also held 251 people hostage, 58 of whom are still detained in Gaza, including 34 people who, according to the Israeli military, have died.

The Gaza Health Ministry stated on Sunday that at least 1,574 Palestinians have been killed since March 18, when the ceasefire ended. Thus, the total death toll since the Gaza genocide began has reached 50,944 people, mostly women and children.
