TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - From Yogyakarta, two pastors from the Protestant Church of Maluku, Mersye Pattipuluhu and Silwanus Lasera, traveled to Jakarta in late September 2025 to visit civil society organizations. They were gathering support to stop mining activities in the villages of Bobo and Wooi, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku. The two pastors also went to the offices of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and the Ministry of Forestry to deliver letters from the villagers rejecting the mining activities.
Imam Shofwan, Head of the Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam) who accompanied the pastors, said the letters included the list and signatures of villagers opposing the mines. "It took hours to submit the documents because we were passed from one office to another," Imam told Tempo on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
Residents of Bobo village reject nickel mining operations by IMS and KTS. They believe the mining activities have triggered territorial disputes and social conflicts. The mines have also caused environmental damage, such as flooding from deforestation.
The strongest resistance, however, targets the sand and iron ore mining project in Wooi village, owned by Bela Sarana Permai (BSP). The company is affiliated with North Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda Laos, who was inaugurated on February 20, 2025.
