TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources projects that the total national electricity production throughout 2025 will reach 354 terawatt hours (TWh). Acting Director General of Electricity, Tri Winarno, explained that as of October 2025, the total electricity production generated by PLN (state-owned electric company) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) had reached 290 TWh.
Of this amount, 66.52 percent or 193.22 TWh comes from coal-fired power plants. Tri stated, "The contribution of coal remains the main support for the national electricity supply. The production trend from January to October shows a relatively stable role as a baseload energy source." Tri conveyed this during a working meeting with the House of Commission XII (DPR) on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
Tri mentioned that natural gas is the second-largest energy source. As of October 2025, it contributed 47.46 TWh, or 16.34 percent of total production. According to Tri, electricity production from gas shows consistent monthly growth and plays an important role as a flexible and balancing energy source for the national electricity system.
Meanwhile, the proportion of renewable energy shows a positive growth trend. Tri stated that electricity production from renewable energy increased from 3.72 TWh in January to 37.48 TWh in October, equivalent to 12.9 percent of the total output.
"Although the contribution of renewable energy is not yet significant, the consistently increasing trend indicates that the foundation of our clean energy development is getting stronger," said Tri.
He further explained that achieving 14.4 percent of the national installed capacity from renewable energy is the result of a long struggle. The construction of hydropower plants in inland areas faces many challenges, and geothermal exploration is high-risk because it is located in forest areas.
On the other hand, Tri continued, the construction of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) is relatively fast but is intermittent and highly dependent on weather conditions. From January to October, oil and vegetable fuels accounted for 12.2 TWh, accounting for 4.23 percent of total electricity production. This energy is mainly used to electrify remote and border areas that are not yet connected to the larger electricity grid.
"The increase in electricity production in 2025 shows that the national energy demand continues to grow in line with the increasing economic activities and development," said Tri.
