TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported Indonesia's total oil, condensate, and natural gas reserves in 2025. According to the latest data from the Director General of Oil and Gas (Migas), Laode Sulaeman, the national oil and condensate reserves reached 4.4 billion barrels. In contrast, the natural gas reserves reached 55.85 Billion Standard Cubic Feet (BSCF).

Laode explained that these figures consist of proven, probable, and potential reserves. He stated that the data illustrate Indonesia's significant potential for fossil energy to support energy needs in the coming decades.

"The distribution of these reserves indicates the potential for further development in these areas, both through advanced exploration activities and the optimization of production from the fields that are already producing," said Laode during a hearing with the House of Representatives Commission XII on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

Oil and Condensate Reserves

According to Laode's data, Central Sumatra has the largest oil and condensate reserves, totaling 1,327.46 million barrels. East Java follows with 878.28 million barrels, and Kalimantan follows with 573.82 million barrels.

The complete order of regions with the largest to smallest oil and condensate reserves is as follows:

  1. Central Sumatra - 1,327.46 million barrels
  2. East Java - 878.28 million barrels
  3. Kalimantan - 573.82 million barrels
  4. West Java - 463.07 million barrels
  5. South Sumatra - 459.95 million barrels
  6. Maluku - 372.79 million barrels
  7. Natuna - 161.34 million barrels
  8. Papua - 109.45 million barrels
  9. Sulawesi - 56.14 million barrels
  10. Aceh - 19.52 million barrels
  11. North Sumatra - 1.73 million barrels

National Natural Gas Reserves

In addition to oil, Laode also presented the latest data on natural gas reserves, which reached 55,850.81 BSCF as of early 2025. He mentioned that natural gas plays a crucial role in maintaining national energy security while supporting the transition to cleaner energy.

The largest gas reserves are in Maluku with a total of 15,783.7 BSCF, followed by Kalimantan with 11,587.6 BSCF, and Papua with 10,258.8 BSCF.

The complete order of regions with the largest to smallest gas reserves is as follows:

  1. Maluku - 15,783.7 BSCF
  2. Kalimantan - 11,587.6 BSCF
  3. Papua - 10,258.8 BSCF
  4. Central Sumatra - 5,307.1 BSCF
  5. Sulawesi - 4,600.5 BSCF
  6. East Java - 3,618.6 BSCF
  7. Natuna - 1,589.9 BSCF
  8. West Java - 1,551.3 BSCF
  9. South Sumatra - 799.9 BSCF
  10. Aceh - 424.0 BSCF
  11. North Sumatra - 329.5 BSCF

Based on this data, Laode believes that natural gas will remain essential to the national energy supply, particularly in supporting the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. "We see natural gas will continue to be an important part of the national energy strategy in the future," said Laode.
