TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A few weeks after its release in theaters, the film Frankenstein is now available on Netflix. The film is considered one of director Guillermo del Toro's best works. Starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, the film follows the journey of Victor Frankenstein who is obsessed with creating life.
In Mary Shelley's novel version, it started from the Frankenstein villa in Switzerland and then journeyed across Europe. Meanwhile, Del Toro's version took place mainly in Scotland, England, and Canada. Production designer Tamara Deverell said the production team initially searched for shooting locations up to the Czech Republic and Hungary. "Because Mary Shelley spent so much time there and the place very much resembles her Frankenstein," she said as quoted from Time Out. But in the end, the team chose Scotland as the main location.
Frankenstein's Shooting Locations
Several important scenes were recorded in Edinburgh. Del Toro and the cast and crew spent two weeks on Royal Mile Edinburgh in September 2024. Deverell said at that time the place was crowded due to the peak tourist season.
Bakehouse Close in Canongate was used as the bloody alley leading to Harlander, while the cobblestone square outside St Giles became the path Victor passed through to the church. As Victor waited for execution, the production team erected a gallows in Lady Star's Close across from the Royal Mile.
Seacliff Beach in North Berwick, Scotland, became the location for the scene where Victor's creation escaped from the fire at the cliff's peak. Although this is a private beach, tourists can visit it with affordable parking fees.

Frankenstein's House in Scotland and England
As for the Frankenstein house, it actually consisted of four separate houses made to look as one, namely Gosford House and Dunecht House in Scotland, and Burghley House and Wilton House in England. Deverell explained that the exterior was recorded at Gosford House because of its beautiful grounds. Its library was recorded at Dunecht House, a private residence in Aberdeenshire. The production team extensively renovated the house, including building all the shelves.
Wilton House, a historic home of the Earls of Pembroke since 1542 in west Salisbury, was used for the Frankenstein burial scene. Meanwhile, Burghley House, a magnificent 16th-century country house in Lincolnshire, was used for the dining room in Harlander and Victor's mother's bedroom settings.
Harlander's house itself was recorded at Hospitalfield House, outside Dundee. This film was the first to be recorded at a historic house converted into an arts center.
In addition, Glasgow Cathedral also served as the interior setting for the scene of confession. However, Deverell admitted that they couldn't record the entire scene in the church due to its complexity. "So we moved it to Gosford House and set it up in the dance hall," she said.
Building a Ship in Canada
The opening scene of Farthest North was recorded in Toronto, Canada. Deverell said her team built the ship in the parking lot outside the studio. The ship measured 45 meters long and 9 meters wide, surrounded by hundreds of meters of ice with snow and ice mountains. "The actual view from the ship's deck is downtown Toronto," she said as quoted from Travel and Leisure Asia.
Other shooting locations in Canada included the University of Toronto campus, especially the Medical Sciences Building, as well as North York, Markham, and the shores of North Bay.
