TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indoensian Defense Minister for the 2014-2019 period, Ryamizard Ryacudu passed away at the age of 76 on Sunday, May 31, 2026. The retired General of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) took his last breath at the Gatot Subroto Central Army Hospital (RSPAD) in Jakarta.
This news was confirmed by the Head of the Information Bureau of the Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait. "We received news of deep sorrow, that General TNI (Ret) Ryamizard Ryacudu has passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 14.03," he said in his statement.
He mentioned that the ex-Chief of the Indonesian Army Staff's body will be laid to rest at the funeral home located in Perumahan Puri Wira Bhakti 1/1b Cikeas, Bogor. "This evening, he will be laid to rest," Rico said.
Ryamizard Ryacudu graduated from the Indonesian Armed Forces Academy for the land force in 1974. He once held strategic positions within the TNI.
In 1999, Ryamizard Ryacudu was assigned as the Commander of Kodam V/Brawijaya. Shortly after, he was transferred to Kodam Jayakarta until 2000 as the Commander of Kodam.
His career took off when he was appointed Commander of the Army's Strategic Reserve Command from 2000 to 2002. He then became the Chief of the Indonesian Army Staff until 2005.
He continued his career in government when he was appointed Defense Minister in President Joko Widodo's first term. During his tenure at the Ministry of Defense, he initiated the National Defense program.
