TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has launched XChat, a new direct message (DM) feature, with some paying for the platform's subscription reporting that they can access it through a beta version.
Nima Owji, a reverse engineer, revealed that XChat will support "more advanced group chats" and will have a "Vanishing Mode" where messages will automatically disappear after the recipient has read them within a certain period of time.
Techcrunch reports on Friday, May 30, that XChat is intended to be "a more robust version" of the existing DM feature, which is the legacy from before Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter.
Features that are part of XChat include group messaging, end-to-end encryption, vanishing mode, marking messages as unread, and file sharing. Messages will also be secured behind a four-digit passcode.
Earlier, the X technician account @XEng announced a temporary halt to the encrypted direct message feature. The suspension was due to maintenance reasons. Users can still access it, but cannot send new messages.
The account did not mention when the feature would be available again. However, after Elon Musk bought Twitter, he announced ambitious plans to completely overhaul existing direct messages and compete with the messaging service Signal.
Twitter rolled out an encrypted DM feature for its verified users in 2023. However, the feature at that time came with several weaknesses. For example, the feature was not available for group chats and only supported encryption for text and links, not for media. The feature also did not offer protection, and encrypted user conversations did not carry over to new devices.
