TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia announced on Monday, August 18, 2025, that the death toll from an explosion at an industrial plant in the country's Ryazan region last week has risen to 24, with 157 others injured, as reported by CBS News.
Russia noted that 103 other injured victims are currently receiving outpatient treatment. Meanwhile, search and rescue operations at the explosion site are still ongoing.
Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov stated on Friday, as reported by Anadolu, that an explosion and subsequent fire occurred in the morning at the workshop, which was reported by the Russian government news agency, RIA, to be the gunpowder shop of the Elastik plant, citing the governor's statement.
Malkov initially noted that five people died and more than 100 others were injured, including from glass fragments. A day later, he declared a day of mourning in the region on Monday.
The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry confirmed that the blast took place on Friday in the village of Lesnoy, located approximately 250 kilometers southeast of Moscow.
A criminal case has been opened regarding the incident based on indications of violations of "industrial safety requirements," reported RIA, citing the regional branch of the Russian Investigative Committee.
According to 112 Telegram channel, which has deep sources in law enforcement, the explosion is suspected to have been triggered by a rogue shell blast.
The factory had previously received several warnings from authorities regarding work safety, it added.
Images shared by the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry showed one of the factory halls reduced to rubble, and officials said search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
Russia's main investigative body has opened a criminal case related to violations of industrial safety rules, indicating that the explosion was likely not triggered by a Ukrainian attack.
Since President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine in 2022, Kyiv has responded with a series of sabotage attacks on Russian industry and infrastructure.
However, fatal factory accidents are not uncommon in Russia due to chronic safety violations caused by mismanagement.
In 2021, another deadly explosion killed 17 people at the same factory, leading to some of its management being sentenced to prison.
