TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Danantara Indonesia, represented by its Chief Investment Officer Pandu Sjahrir, is currently participating in the bidding process for 80 hectares of land in Saudi Arabia. This substantial plot is intended for the establishment of the Indonesian Kampung Haji (Hajj Village) project in Mecca. The bidding process involves 90 other participants.
The Danantara team registered for the auction last week and is now actively bidding. "We are currently bidding. Please pray for us, as we are trying to acquire 80 hectares of land and are also planning to purchase some surrounding land, along with the necessary permits," Pandu said during the Antara Business Forum discussion in Jakarta on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
This investment underscores Danantara's strategic goal of investing in Mecca and promoting Indonesian businesses on a regional and global scale. The Hajj Village investment will initially focus on several sectors, including food and beverage (F&B), sharia fashion, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, media and recreation, and other sharia businesses.
"Because 80 hectares is equivalent to 2.5 times the size of Jakarta's SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District), God willing, we will acquire it," he added.
Indonesia is one of the largest contributors to the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages globally. The Saudi government has requested the Indonesian government to double the capacity of Indonesian pilgrims within the next five years. Consequently, Indonesia has been granted the first opportunity to directly purchase land in Mecca for this purpose.
Following the discussion session, Pandu reiterated that the results of the 80-hectare land bidding, which involves approximately 90 participants, are expected to be announced in mid-December. Danantara is also exploring several assets outside of the current auction to meet Indonesia's overall demand.
Last August, Danantara Indonesia's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Rosan Roeslani, visited Jeddah and Mecca. Rosan was directly mandated by President Prabowo Subianto to oversee the continuation of the Hajj Village construction plan in the Holy Land.
"This visit is a mandate from the President to ensure that the plan to develop the Hajj Village in Mecca can proceed as expected. God willing, we will oversee this process from the beginning until it is realized, so that all Indonesian pilgrims have facilities that are representative and suitable during their worship," Rosan said in an official statement on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
