TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China has warned the Trump administration not to reignite trade tensions by reintroducing tariffs on its goods next month. Beijing threatened to retaliate against countries making deals with the United States to cut China out of supply chains.
As reported by CNA, Washington and Beijing agreed to a trade framework in June that restored the fragile relationship between the two countries. However, with many details still unclear, traders and investors on both sides of the Pacific are watching to see if the deal will collapse or lead to a lasting agreement.
On Monday, President Donald Trump began informing trade partners about much higher U.S. tariffs starting on August 1. This comes after he postponed all but 10 percent of his import duties in April on most countries, to give them time to strike deals with the world's largest economy.
China, which was initially hit with tariffs of over 100 percent, has until August 12 to reach an agreement with the White House to prevent Trump from reintroducing additional import restrictions that were imposed during the tit-for-tat tariffs in April and May.
"One conclusion is abundantly clear: dialogue and cooperation are the only correct path," the official People's Daily remarked, referring to the ongoing trade tensions between China and the U.S.
The article, signed by "Zhong Sheng" or "Voice of China," a term used by the paper to express foreign policy views, reiterated Beijing's view that Trump's tariffs are tantamount to "bullying."
The paper added, "Practice has proven that only by firmly upholding principled positions can one truly safeguard one's legitimate rights and interests."
This statement marks the beginning of the next round of tariff wars if Trump refuses to comply with what the ruling Communist Party's official newspaper calls a "so-called 'final deadline.'"
The average U.S. tariff on Chinese exports is now at 51.1 percent. Meanwhile, the average Chinese tariff on U.S. goods stands at 32.6 percent, with both sides bearing the brunt of their trade, according to the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
The article also criticizes regional economies considering tariff reduction deals with the U.S. that break their supply chain with China.
Last week, Vietnam secured a reduction in tariffs to 20 percent from 46 percent with a deal on goods that are "trans-shipped" through Vietnam, which are typically from China and would be subject to a 40 percent duty.
