CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta - The 2025 Cannes Film Festival in Paris has opened last Tuesday, May 13, 2025 local time. This year, Cannes has released new rules regarding attire or dress code.
Until May 24, the stars attending premieres and other events scattered throughout the Cannes festival area must adhere to the organization's strict clothing guidelines.
As stated on the official FAQ website for the event, "nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in other festival areas for reasons of modesty." In addition, excessive clothing, especially with large trailing ends that obstruct guest traffic and complicate seating in theaters, is not allowed."
Guests attending film premieres from around 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Grand Thtre Lumire are required to wear evening attire such as long dresses and tuxedos.
The website also includes alternative styles that can be chosen by men and women to wear in the ambiguous category. This includes "short black dresses, cocktail dresses, dark-colored pantsuits, formal tops with black pants; black or dark blue suits with bow ties or dark-colored ties."
In addition, acceptable footwear includes elegant shoes and sandals with or without heels. Meanwhile, sneakers are not allowed.
As may be known to Cannes followers, what attendees wear for footwear is just as important as what they wear on top, especially after, in 2015, women attending the premiere of Carol were denied entry because of their flat shoes that contradicted the festival's high-heel policy.
Years later, in 2023, actress Jennifer Lawrence made headlines for displaying her flip-flops on the carpet. At that time, she stated that she swapped her high heels for comfort, not to make a statement or oppose protocol.
"The Festival's welcoming team is required to prohibit red carpet access for anyone who does not comply with this dress code rule," the website reads, with the additional statement that "for all other showings, appropriate clothing is sufficient."
In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, representatives of the event said that the dress code rules were updated to reflect certain long-standing rules. They also stated that they did not intend to regulate the clothing itself, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet in accordance with the event and French law.
With the event's firmly established fashion guidelines, it still creates an air of mystery about what we can expect from the Cannes Film Festival's red carpet. Because, although this event is all about cinema, Cannes also revolves around dramatic fashion moments that rely on unexpected appearances, from Jean Paul Gaultier's sheer dress in 1997 worn by Milla Jovovich to Bella Hadid's statement showing her nipple in last year's Saint Laurent ensemble.
