TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The military of Madagascar announced on Tuesday, October 14, 2024, evening that they have taken control of the country. This move, as reported by France24, came shortly after the National Assembly agreed to impeach President Andry Rajoelina.
Capsat, the elite military unit that had previously helped Rajoelina overthrow the government 16 years ago, stated that they have taken control.
Members of Rajoelina's party, IRMAR, also attended the impeachment vote in the national assembly. The party even provided a majority vote against him, increasing pressure for him to resign.
There were a total of 30 votes in favor of impeachment, compared to one abstention. Now, the Constitutional Court must approve the impeachment.
Former President and opposition leader Marc Ravalomanana stated that the National Assembly had held an extraordinary session to "note the absence of power in Madagascar."
"There is a power vacuum. The solution is not revenge, neither confusion, but a peaceful, inclusive and responsible transition," said Ravalomanana.
He lost power to Rajoelina after a coup in 2009.
However, Rajoelina rejected the impeachment, stating that the result was "legally void." He noted that the parliamentary meeting had taken place despite his dissolution of the national assembly, thus deeming the impeachment vote unconstitutional.
It is unclear where Rajoelina was on Monday evening when he made a live broadcast to the people via Facebook from a "safe place."
Meanwhile, thousands of protesters in the capital demanded his resignation.
