The West Java Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that dozens of houses, as well as educational and health facilities, were damaged in Karawang Regency due to a 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Bekasi, Indonesia, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
Meanwhile, in Bekasi Regency, one place of worship was affected by the earthquake. "The data is dynamic," said Hadi Rahmat, a Public Relations Expert at the West Java BPBD, in a statement on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Houses and buildings affected by the earthquake are scattered across Telukjambe Barat District, Klari District, Pangkalan District, Tegalwaru District, and Ciampel District in Karawang Regency. In Bekasi Regency, the affected place of worship is located in Sukabungah Village, Bojongmangu District.
The West Java BPBD detailed the earthquake-affected buildings in Karawang Regency, including 4 lightly damaged houses, 31 moderately damaged houses, 1 heavily damaged house, 2 affected houses, 4 affected health facilities, 1 affected building (hall), 1 affected place of worship, and 1 affected educational facility.
Furthermore, the earthquake also resulted in 40 households (104 people) being affected. There have been no reports of casualties due to the earthquake.
Hadi stated that the data was collected until Thursday at 07:55 AM local time. "The current condition is still under data validation," he said.
Prior to this, the West Java BPBD confirmed that the collapse of the ceiling of Purwasari Community Health Center in Sukasari Village, Purwasari District, Karawang Regency, reported to have occurred on Wednesday night, was not caused by the earthquake. "This was not due to the earthquake," said Andrie Setiawan, a Public Relations Expert at the West Java BPBD, on Wednesday.
Andrie cited information from the Karawang BPBD, stating that the collapse of the Purwasari Community Health Center ceiling was due to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, compounded by the weak condition of the concrete roof that could not withstand the load.
