TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A series of tectonic earthquakes has been felt in the Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia, consecutively on Wednesday approaching midnight. A resident in Cimahi, Rosma, admitted to feeling the tremor. "I felt the shaking six times," she told Tempo on Thursday morning, November 20, 2025.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG recorded the timeline of earthquakes felt on Wednesday night, November 19, 2025, the first one at 10:54 PM local time with a magnitude of 3.1.
The earthquake's epicenter was known to be on land, located 22 kilometers southeast of the Bandung Regency center. It had a depth of 5 kilometers. "The earthquake is classified as shallow due to active fault activity," said the Head of BMKG II Tangerang, Hartanto, in a written statement after the earthquake.
The impact of the earthquake in the form of tremors was felt in the areas of Kertasari, Cimaung, Pangalengan, and Pameungpeuk with intensity scales of II-III MMI. This scale refers to earthquake vibrations that occur during the day and are felt by several people indoors. The earthquake might cause light hanging objects to sway, but it could also be felt as if a truck is passing by.
Six minutes later, at 11:50 PM local time, another weaker earthquake with a magnitude of 2.2 occurred. The epicenter of this earthquake was also located on land, 24 kilometers southeast of the Bandung Regency. The tremor from a depth of 5 kilometers was only reported to be felt in the Pangalengan area with an intensity scale of II MMI, or only felt by a few people indoors if the earthquake occurred during the day.
Then, in the early hours of Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 12:26 AM local time, a stronger tremor occurred with a magnitude of 3.2. The epicenter was located 23 kilometers southeast of the Bandung Regency at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The impact of this earthquake in the form of tremors was felt in the Pangalengan area with an intensity scale between III - IV MMI. This means that if the earthquake occurred during the day, the vibrations were felt indoors as if a truck was passing by and were felt by many people. It could also break pottery and make windows or doors rattle. Meanwhile, in the areas of Banjaran, Ibun, Kertasari, Pasirjambu, Baleendah, and Margaasih, the intensity scale of the earthquake ranged from II-III MMI.
Thus far, according to the BMKG, there have been no reports of building damage as a result of the series of earthquakes. Apart from those that occurred around midnight, BMKG also noted earthquakes occurring on Wednesday morning (M2.9) and the previous Monday approaching midnight (M2.7).
Since early November, a series of earthquakes with a magnitude between 2-3 has been occurring in the southern region of Bandung Regency. BMKG's Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Daryono, explained that the affected earthquake area is a deformation zone. "It's not just one or two fault lines, but many with short fault segments," he told Tempo on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
